Ear Cleaning
Ear Cleaning is very important part of grooming your pet. It will keep your pet's ear clean and fresh and free from infections and mitts. It is not hard to do this on a weekly basis.Common ear signs:
Head shaking and ear scratching
Ears sensitive to touch
Discharges and odor
Hematomas (blood blisters) on the ear
Swelling and skin redness
Melanomas (tumors)
To prevent this from happening follow these steps to clean your dogs ear every week.
Tools you will need:
Hemostat (tweezers)
Medicated ear powder
Ear cleaning solution
Cotton
Do not use Q-Tips or alcohol.
Steps:
1.) Lift the pet's ear and expose the inside of the ear. Using your thumb and finger, quickly remove hair from around the external ear opening. Pull in the direction of the hair growth and only small amounts of hair at a time. You can put in some ear powder in ear to dry the ear wax to make the hair easier to pull.
2.) If there is hair in the ear canal it should be removed when there are no signs of ear problems. However, never clean or remove more the one-half inch down into the ear. The area further down in the ear canal is best left to veterinary care. To remove this hair, spray a light amount of ear powder into the ear, to absorb moisture and dry ear wax and hairs.
3.) Using hemostats grasp small amounts of pet hair and pull outward toward you slowly. Careful, do not pinch the sensitive ear skin. Never probe further down the one-half inch into the ear canal. You must exercise this extreme caution in order not to disturb or damage the ear drum. Clean hemostats after drawing out hair and wax, and continue removing hair until done. Sterilize hemostats when done.
4.) Using cleaning solution from vet put a small amount in the ear rub in using the out side of the ear. Let sit for a few minutes not to long. Now let your pet shake its hard a few time to break up the build up in the ear of dirt and wax. Now take cotton and wipe out ear never go to deep, go as far as you index finger will let you.
This is a good way to make sure you do not go into deep and cause ear problems with the ear drum. The pet will still shake after the cleaning but it will stop after a few minutes and the pet will feel better. Now enjoy the love from pet with their nice clean ears. You can give your pet a treat after this that way they will look forward to the next time.
